Are red and white wines fermented in the same type of barrel and if not why?

No. Traditionally, red wines are fermented in oak barrels which helps with oxidation and provides tannins for the wine. White wines are generally fermented in stainless steel tanks.

The other major difference is that red wines are fermented with the grape skins and seeds, whereas white wines are not.
