Where did the pronouncing "Z" as "zed" originate?

The majority of English-speaking countries pronounce "Z" as "Zed", particularly those with British-English origins. Indeed, it seems that only the United States favours the "Zee" pronunciation.

The "Zed" pronunciation comes from Zeta, the Greek letter, via the Old French "Zede". This pronunciation dates to c. 15th century.
