In 1883, Emma Lazarus wrote the sonnet entitled "The New Colossus" at the base of the Statue of Liberty to help pay for the pedestal Lady Liberty stands on. The bronze carving was placed at the base in 1903. This poem concludes with the often-quoted lines:
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
