The Gotthard Base Tunnel is considered to be a brilliant success in engineering at a length of 57.1 kilometer (35.5 mile). Unfortunately on Aug 17, 2023, sixteen train cars jumped the tracks and caused significant damage to the tunnel. The Gotthard Tunnel is a critical artery for the transport of goods in Switzerland and having the route closed will cause many problems for logistics.
