Since 2021 Sri Lanka has required all working elephants to have a biometric identification card. The ultimate goal is to help protect the animals from abuse. So the riders are not allowed to consume alcohol and the elephants are required to have regular medical check-ups, get proper food, and a sufficient bath for health. The owners are not allowed to ride the elephants on asphalt which can burn the feet of the elephants or use baby elephants for labor. It is a step in the right direction but more needs to be done. Vietnam followed suit in 2023 with its own ID law for elephants.
