Red (and yellow) cards were first introduced in the 1970 tournament in Mexico, but no red cards were needed. The first time one was used in the FIFA world Cup was in the following competition in West Germany. The unlucky player on the receiving end was Chile's Carlos Caszely.
The first player to be sent off - although not through a physical red card - in the history of the FIFA World Cup was Peruvian Placido Galindo in 1930. He was sent off in the 70th minute against Romania, but played on in the second game against eventual world champions Uruguay.
