Mainly a shocking vivid long-term memory. For example, witnessing a crime or tragedy. It is worth noting that a perceived moment like this seems crystal clear at the time and even years later, but surprisingly can be inaccurate. Many people throughout history have been accused of a crime because of one of these types of flashbulb memories only to discover the real criminal was someone else.
The term flashbulb memory was coined by Brown and Kulik in 1977. They formed the special-mechanism hypothesis, which argues for the existence of a special biological memory mechanism that, when triggered by an event exceeding critical levels of surprise and consequentiality, creates a permanent record of the details and circumstances surrounding the experience. Brown and Kulik believed that although flashbulb memories are permanent, they are not always accessible from long-term memory.
