Resources seems to be the determining factor. AAA studios are big businesses which have the money to create top of the range games with complicated game play - they also have the resources to promote the games. Their name also allows them to charge a price which enables them to recoup their outlay. Indie is short for independent, standing for smaller businesses which have to work within a limited budget and with fewer tools at their disposal.
