Ionian is a 'Mode'. C Major is a 'Scale'. They can both sound exactly the same, What is the difference?

Scales are related to specific keys, while modes are independent of the key, but are based purely on intervals.

So, for example, you could have a piece written in the key of F, using the ionian mode.
