As a young man, Thomas Burberry established his company in 1856 to help protect people from the British rain. Ernest Shackleton wore Burberry gabardine clothing for all 3 of his major expeditions. Thomas Burberry patented gabardine in 1888 being a fabric that was both breathable and weatherproof. Over 150 years later the company is still going strong in 2023 including a new rainbow pattern for LBGTQ+ customers.
