While Club Deportivo Guadalajara, generally known as "Chivas", has a "cantera" policy of recruiting home grown Mexican players, this does not mean that they exclusively employ players that have been born and raised in Mexico. As of the 2023-24 Liga MX season, Chivas have two first-team players who, while having Mexican parentage, were born outside Mexico, and represent other national teams - winger Cade Cowell was born in California and has been capped by the US National Team, although his mother is of Mexican descent. In order to get around Chivas's "Mexican only" policy, Cowell obtained a Mexican passport to gain dual citizenship. Goalkeeper Oscar Whalley was born in Zaragoza in Spain to a British father and a Mexican mother, making him Mexican by birth, and has represented Spain's under-21 side, making him eligible to represent Spain's full side if selected. However, his parentage also makes him eligible to represent both England and Mexico.

Another side that has a similar policy to Chivas is Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, who recruit only players from the Basque region. While this is often taken to mean that they will only sign players born in the Basque Country, in reality it is more they recruit players either born as Basque, or who were youth players at other Basque clubs. This has allowed the club to sign non-Spainiards, with French international Bixente Lizarazu, who was born in the French Basque region, the first French-Basque player to appear for the club.

Other clubs around the world that maintain a policy of not fielding foreign players include Alt?nordu F.K. from Izmir in Turkey, Paksi FC from Paks in Hungary and CD El Nacional from Quito in Ecuador. However, as with Chivas and Athletic Bilbao, some of these clubs have a less restrictive policy than at first appears.
