Since the Super Bowl takes place the following calendar year from the actual season (i.e. January) the decision was made to use Roman numerals to reduce confusion over which season of the Super Bowl. Of course, Roman numerals can be quite confusing, and the fact that the Super Bowl didn't start on the season that ends in zero, I convert the number to the date as I find it easier to understand that a January (now February) game was for the previous fall season.
