Balderdash means "nonsense" today but its origins are related to a strange mixture of drinks. The exact origin is unknown, but the earliest records of the word in the 16th century started as a strange mixture and morphed into an unpleasant mixture. The earliest examples were watered-down beer or wine. Other mixtures included milk with spirits like eggnog which is a mix of eggs, milk, sugar and liquor. While balderdash came to mean unpleasant, I might suggest that eggnog is quite delicious!
