Who are Papatuanuku and Ranginui?

In Maori mythology, Ranginui and Papatuanuku are the Sky Father and Earth Mother from whom all the other gods are descended.

They are also known by shortened versions of their names: Rangi and Papa.

In a creation myth, this primal couple help explain how the world came to be and also the origin of Maori peoples.
