It's on fire, and has been for about 6,000 years.

Just beneath the surface is a coal seam which has been smouldering for that length of time. The rate of burning is about one metre of the seam per year.
In its history, the seam has covered a total area of 6.5 km, making it the oldest continuous coal fire in the world.
