Polyester in 1981! The moviegoer would get a scratch and sniff card to go along with their movie! When the scene that had a smell came up the film would flash the number that the watchers were supposed to scratch to smell. Not sure I would be eager to scratch numbers 2, 5, or 6!
The ten smells (developed by 3M per Waters in the supplements section of the DVD release) are:

1) Roses
2) Flatulence
3) Model airplane glue
4) Pizza
5) Gasoline
6) Skunk
7) Natural gas
8) New car smell
9) Dirty shoes
10) Air freshener
