The flight route originally landed in Los Angeles to refuel which required the passengers to leave the plane and go through customs before continuing the flight. After COVID and the increased regulations, the decision was made to make the flight non-stop. Plus by making it non-stop it is no longer an international flight as Papeete is part of French Polynesia.
