There were 400,000 tickets that were made but only a fraction of them were actually sold. Each one was sold for 10 shillings which was about 3 weeks of earnings. The grand prize was 5,000 pounds the equivalent of around $3 million in today's money. Queen Elizabeth held the lottery to raise money for needed building projects. Due to the lack of enthusiasm for the lottery, it only had a short run and was stopped in 1571.
