Lenticels help with gas exchange. The lenticels allow oxygen to enter and carbon dioxide and water vapor to exit. On trees, the lenticels can be seen as dark horizontal lines in the bark. The lenticels also help farmers to know when apples and pears are ripe and ready to pick.
