Niger and Nigeria are neighbours in West Africa. Both countries have been home to kingdoms and tribal states before being colonised by European nations. Niger was colonised by France, Nigeria by Great Britain. Borders in Africa took little or no importance in the European country's grab for resources in the Scramble for Africa. Despite the official languages in the two countries being different, the ubiquitous use of the Hausa language and shared Muslim religion makes strong ties between people living in Niger and those living in northern Nigeria. People who live in these border communities do not even believe in the existence of any demarcation that divides them.
The River Niger is the third longest river in Africa and the principal river in western Africa.it is part of the 1,608 kilometres / 999 mile border between Nigeria and Niger. Kainji Dam, is the largest dam on the River. The dam is 72m high and 7.2km long and was designed to provide electricity for Nigeria and improved navigation of the Niger upstream. The dam created Kainji Lake, a reservoir covering an area of 1,300kmĀ².
Lake Chad is located in the far west of Chad and forms part of the boundary between Chad and Nigeria. Parts of the lake also cover Niger and Cameroon and is 2,000 km2 (770 sq mi) in size. It is fed mainly by the Chari River through the Lagone tributary .
