It was called the drawing room, but it had nothing to do with drawing pictures, or indeed anything to do with art. It was an abbreviated way of saying the 'withdrawing room'. After dinner, people would withdraw (leave) the dining room to this room, where they could relax usually after a meal. It was commonplace for the 'drawing room' to be near the front door (sometimes especially in the UK, it was called the front room ) as it was a 'reception room' and next to the dining room. This room was sometimes called the 'parlour' (This was derived from the French word 'parloir' - to speak. It was often a formal room (with the best furniture) where people could meet and was used on Sundays.). Other synonyms include 'lounge' and 'sitting room', all of which imply relaxation.
