The inventors just happened to be Scottish doctors and their purposes were for human medical procedures, including childbirth.

Back in about 1780, these physicians produced a hand-cranked chainsaw to cut through mothers' pelvises when they were having problems delivering their children. Other uses included excising diseased bone and orthopedic operations.
