Apple Daily was a popular pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong, known for its outspoken criticism of the Chinese and Hong Kong governments. Founded in 1995 by media tycoon Jimmy Lai, it became one of the most influential publications in the region, particularly known for its investigative journalism, tabloid-style reporting and strong editorial stance on civil liberties and democracy.
The newspaper ceased operations in June 2021 amid increasing pressure from the authorities, including the arrest of its executives under the National Security Act, which led to the freezing of its assets and its eventual closure.
