It was Iceland where Halla Tómasdóttir won the presidency on June 1. The top 3 vote-getters were all women.
However she was not the first female president. That honor (and that of first freely elected female president of any country in the world) goes to Vigdís Finnbogadóttir who held the office from 1980 to 1996 (four terms).
No other European country voted for a new president on June 1.
Halla Tómasdóttir is not the first female elected Prime Minister in Iceland, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir (1980-1996), Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir (2009 - 2013) and Katrín Jakobsdóttir (2017 - 2024) preceded her.
