The game in question is/was Volleyball and its inventor William G. Morgan (1895) originally named it after Badminton.

Morgan (1870-1942) was persuaded that a name reflecting the nature of the sport would be better. In 1985, he was the first inductee to the Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
