In 1947, why did President Harry S. Truman ask Americans to stop eating meat on Tuesdays and poultry products on Thursdays?

After WWII the US was having an economic boom however, much of Europe was struggling. Truman requested Americans go without meat for a few days a week so they could share their food with Europe. While this was a humanitarian effort, it also was an effort to prevent desperate European countries from sliding back into war.
