The Law of Return allowed anyone with at least one grandparent who is Jewish along with their spouse citizenship in Israel.
The Law of Return was passed unanimously by the Knesset, Israel's Parliament, on 5 July 1950. The date chosen so that it would coincide with the anniversary of the death of Zionist visionary Theodor Herzl.
