In 1965, why did Queen Elizabeth II bequeath an acre of land at Runnymede to the United States of America?

Runnymede is probably most famous for the Magna Carta, but there was also a monument that was erected to celebrate John F Kennedy after he was assassinated. In 1965 Queen Elizabeth II was kind enough to bequeath the acre that the memorial sits on to the United States so that it would be on US soil.
