How did the band Nickelback get their name?

It comes from the expression "Here's your nickel back" said by band member Mike Kroeger while working as a server at Starbucks. The nickel was the customer's change. The original name of the band when it formed in the early 1990s was "Village Idiot."

Nickelback is a Canadian rock band formed in 1995 in Hanna, Alberta. It is composed of lead guitarist and lead vocalist Chad Kroeger, rhythm guitarist, keyboardist and backing vocalist Ryan Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger, and drummer Daniel Adair.
