The Mad Hatter had the marking 10/6 on his hat in Lewis Carroll's novel "Alice in Wonderland." In America 10/6 is the date October 6th, so that has been declared Mad Hatter Day where all kinds of silliness is encouraged. By the way, the numbers on the hat were meant to stand for 10 shillings and 6 pence, the cost of the hat.
