Western Australia, with a population density of 1.02 people per square kilometre, has the lowest density of any state. The Northern Territory, at 0.18, is significantly lower in density, but is not a state. In comparison, the state of Victoria has a density of 26.11, and the Australian Capital Territory (again, not a state) has a whopping 171.4 residents per square kilometre. (To think in square miles, multiply each number by about 2.5.)
