In corduroy fabric, "wales" refer to the vertical ridges or raised lines that run along the length of the fabric. The number of wales per inch determines the fabric's texture and appearance. Corduroy can have wide wales (fewer ridges per inch) for a chunkier feel or fine wales (more ridges per inch) for a smoother, more refined texture. The wale count typically ranges from around 1.5 to 21 wales per inch, with lower numbers indicating wider ridges.
