The Crest of Ontario was adopted in 1868 and revised in 1909.
On the shield of green are three maple leaves which have been an important emblem of the province since the early 1800. The cross of St. George denotes English heritage. On the crest is a black bear which is widespread throughout the province
The supporters include on the right side a moose and on the left side a deer, both are considered 'provincial' animals.

I question the statement 'even though it is not native to that area'.
Ontario is fortunate to be home to an abundance of forests and wetlands that provide valuable moose habitat that sustains a healthy moose population.

They live in every province and territory except Prince Edward Island. Often considered a symbol of Canada, the moose is featured on Ontario's provincial coat of arms.

The arms of Prince Edward Island use black foxes as supporters and a blue jay as a crest, with no moose involved. Like many other provinces and Canada itself, a non-native lion is used. link https://www.heraldry.ca/content/arms_badges_prov.php

Moose are relatively new to Labrador, having only colonized the area in the late 1940s, and little is known about this population.

Moose were introduced to central Newfoundland in 1878 with the release of a male and female from nearby Nova Scotia . A second release of two males and two females from New Brunswick, into western Newfoundland, followed in 1904.
