The two Swiss climbers who became the second team to successfully summit Mount Everest in 1956 were Ernst Schmied and Jürg Marmet. They achieved this feat on 23 May 1956 as part of the Swiss Everest-Lhotse Expedition.
This expedition also marked the first ascent of Lhotse, the fourth-highest mountain in the world, accomplished by another member of the team, Fritz Luchsinger, along with Ernst Reiss.
