In 2021, the holding company which owns the web sites Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp changed its name from Facebook to Meta Platforms Inc. to emphasize its focus on the "metaverse", incorporating virtual reality and other features.

The holding company's name change did not affect the names of the web sites or applications of the companies it owns.
