In 1789, Bligh and his loyal crew was set adrift 30 nautical miles from the Tongan island of Tofua. It is here that he first made landfall with the goal of securing supplies for his planned journey to Timor in the Dutch East Indies. One of his crew was killed by natives, and so they did not dare to stop at the Fiji islands or any other location until they arrived at Coupang, a settlement in Timor, after a 47-day voyage. Bligh was eventually appointed governor of the colony of New South Wales in 1806.
