The 398 doubloons were part of the loot stolen by James Honeyman and William J. Murray, who carried out one of the first recorded bank robberies in US history.

In 1831, the two criminals broke into the City Bank of New York (now part of Citibank) and stole around $245,000 in cash, silver and gold - including the 398 doubloons, which were never recovered. The robbery shocked the nation at the time and both men were eventually caught. But much of the loot, including the gold coins, was never found.
