What is the reasoning of the 'old wives tale' that you should (or should not) eat pork if there is a 'r' in the month?

As the daughter of a pork butcher back in the fifties when refrigeration was not as good as it is nowadays, pork sales fell in the summer months (May, June, July, August when there is not an R in the month) because pork went 'off' faster than all other meats.
