Any form of racing could be an answer. It may be obvious that somebody or animal is way out in front and is going to win, but it has to be verified that there are no objections by other competitors, trainers etc. or that no rules have been broken, and this can only be done after the race has been run.
In Orienteering, competitors are normally started at intervals and are timed. The competitor who visits all the controls in the right order in the fastest time is the winner, but you can't tell who it will be until the last competitor is finished.
