In some breeds both sexes have horns, such as the Danish Red, White Park, and the famous Texas Longhorn. But in other breeds neither gender has horns like Angus, Polled Hereford, and Red Poll. Lots of times, the animals have had their horns removed. So. If you see a bovine with horns it means only that the animal can hurt you real bad when it’s mad!
p.s. Lady cows are cows, gentleman cows are steers without, er, their um, well they’ve been castrated. And if their voices are not high, so to speak (you have to look) they are bulls. In Montana, a herd of beef animals is likely to be called ‘steers’ and in Texas they call a herd ‘cows’ - both times the herd may well be of mixed gender. Dairy cow herds are all cows.
Surprisingly—for us city folks at least—cows (that is, mature female cattle) can have horns! In fact, there are several cattle breeds in which the cows have horns. To name just a few: the Danish Red, the White Park, and the Texas Longhorn.
Having horns works both ways; that is, cattle without horns can be bulls. The Angus and the Red Poll are examples of breeds that are hornless, be they cow or be they bull!
