Gary Fencik played twelve seasons with the Chicago Bears and is their all-time leader in interceptions and total tackles. He was the team's defensive captain through the 1980's including the 1985 Super Bowl championship season.
In addition to making several Pro Bowl appearances, Gary Fencik made all of the NFC and NFL teams throughout his career. He also was awarded a gold record and a platinum video award for the 1985 Super Bowl Shuffle.
His first career interception was the last pass Joe Namath ever threw in the NFL.
Gary Fencik intercepted Joe Namath in the 4th quarter of the Monday night game at Chicago in 1977. After the Fencik interception, Joe Namath returned in the game to throw 6 more passes for a total of 10 yards. He completed 3 of the 6 passes for 10 yards before being replaced by Pat Haden. His last pass was caught by RB John Cappelletti for 1 yard. Joe Namath retired from the NFL the next day.
