Alfred Hitchcock was most certainly born with a belly button, but he likely lost it during surgery.

I don't know about Alfred Hitchcock, but it is entirely possible not to have been born with a belly button. The umbilical cord is attached to the fetus internally, not externally. The abdominal wall then forms around the umbilicus.

However, if the abdominal wall fails to close around the umbilical cord, it is entirely possible to be born without a belly button. I was born with a hole in my abdomen and my external organs on the outside of my body. The surgeons put the organs back inside and stitched me up. I assure you, I have no belly button and never have!

It appears to be true. Alfred Hitchcock had his belly button remove during a surgery.

This question has floated around the Internet for a while, and I finally found something that may be considered at least potential validation:
He once told actress Karen Black that he didn't have one, and she laughed it off. It sounds like something weird Hitch would say, right? According to her, he promptly pulled up his shirt and showed her. His was also the result of surgeries - he had lots of gastrointestinal problems.

And here's the link to the actual audio interview with the actress Kate Black:
