Shanks are legs: hence "to ride Shanks's pony" is to travel on one's legs or to walk.

Other terms are 'Shank's mare' ''going by the marrow-bone stage' or another 'by Walker's bus'

The marrow-bone is a play on Marylebone in London, which was formerly pronounced 'Marry-bun'.
