Abrahams father had 2 other sons Nahor and Haran, the father of Lot. While in egypt fear for his personal safety led him to represent sarah as his sister.
Abram deceives Pharaoh by passing his wife off as his sister
In Genesis 20:12, Abraham justifies his lies about Sarah being his sister by saying "she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife." (New Oxford Annotated Bible) In other words, Sarah is Abraham's half-sister.
In rabbinical tradition, apparently, Sarah is Abraham's niece, also called "Iscah," one of the daughters of his brother Haran (the other being Milcah, who married Abraham's brother Nahor) and adopted by Abraham's father Terah. Though all of this is quite messy and is disputed. See Genesis 11.
And the rest of the Yay to Frankie. In the Gen.11:29 Iscah and Sarai are given as two different people - there is no gloss to say 'which is' as is usual when someone has two designations. Interesting too that Abraham's son Isaac tried the same trick (she's my sister) with his wife Rebekah - and tries it on with Abimelech too as Abraham did.
