It's not a word or phrase. It's a sound. It's the sound of a wind up and a hit, usually to the face. It's sort of like Jackie Gleason's Ralph Kramden saying "Bang, ZOOM!" to his wife, Alice along with the hand motions.

It is equivalent to "there it is". Very much like what KosyLady said.
Emeril says "Bam" Tony says "Bada Bing".
It can be used as Pipistrello says. As an exclaimation to accentuate a conversation about slapping someone around.
Don't forget "bada bing," which the OED classifies as an exclamation, also found in the form "bada bing bada boom." It's something that "will happen effortlessly and predictably," the definition explains; the origin is "probably imitating the sound of a drumroll."
