Many people believe they are allergic to animal hair, but it's not the animal's hair that is the allergen. The allergic reaction is actually caused by a protein present in the dander and saliva of the animal.
These allergens become airborne as microscopic particles, which when inhaled into the nose or lungs can produce allergic symptoms.
