"I am that I am" (Hebrew: pronounced Ehyeh asher ehyeh) -- also translated as "I am who I am" is the response God used in the Bible when Moses asked for his name (Exodus 3:14). It is one of the most famous verses in the Torah. Hayah means "existed" or "was" in Hebrew; "ehyeh" is the first person singular present/future form. Ehyeh asher ehyeh is generally interpreted to mean "I am that I am" (King James Bible and others), yet, as indicated, is most literally translated as "I-shall-be that I-shall-be."

For people who don't know Hebrew we must depend on translations of the Old Testament. All English texts that I am aware of read "I am who I am". Does an English translation exist that says "I would be that I would be"?

And if we are getting picky even Popeye doesn't say it, he says something closer to "I yam what I yam".
