What's the difference between a nook and a cranny?

The difference between a nook and a cranny is that the nook is a corner and a cranny is a crack.

A nook doesn't need to be a corner -- it can simply be a secluded alcove or recess somewhere -- but a cranny is definitely a crack or crevice:
