Yes I understand, but cavemen are not a complete myth considering the many prehistoric cave paintings that have been found world wide.

Re. "the staple of popular culture." Don't let the fact that it's from the BBC make you take it--or me--seriously.
Unlike their real-world counterparts, who developed a wide range of axes, knives, spears and arrows, cavemen have only ever developed one weapon. This is a curious form of club, apparently carved with great dexterity from a tree branch. It is wide and knobbly at the painful end, narrowing seamlessly to an ergonomic handle. Since this looks nothing like any part of any known tree, it can only be assumed that somewhere there are hordes of caveman artisans churning them out. Mating rituals appear to be sophisticated and involved. The male may spend many hours selecting the perfect club and honing its weight and balance. He will then bash his chosen female over the head and drag her back to his cave by her hair.

Many people live in caves today. As to whether they drag each other around by the hair, we can hope they don't.

An interesting exploration of this very question.

The ‘cultural myth of the mating behavior of cavemen’ is first referred to in the 19th century in Prehistoric fiction - adventure stories set in the remotest human past. There is a gradual move towards this myth and it appears that it was in the 1920s that it become widely used to describe the general loutish behaviour of men. Later it became more a source of humour appearing particularly in
cartoons. I have been unable to find academic documents of the period speculating on human mating habits in prehistory.

I would like to refer you to this excellent site on the literary genre of Prehistoric fiction.

This brings to mind the way the decimated tribe of Benjamin kidnapped their wives from a dance, which in turn brought to mind the "rape" of the Sabine women. Here both stories are together on one page. I apologize for 5 links on my previous post.

Then there's Samson, who had a woman knock him to the ground, more or less, and weave his hair into her loom. You can find it in Judges 16:13--I'm not pasting in another link!
