Back in the days before CADD we used a product called Scumex, which was basically eraser crumbs, to remove excess graphite. It's been a long time, but I believe we may have called the bits produced from an eraser "scum" even though it was the graphite particles that were actually the scum you wanted to get rid of. I can't find too many references to it, other than the well known practical joke about replacing some poor guy's Scumex with Parmesan cheese.
